The St Albans MP, Anne Main, has lauded Victoria Playing Fields, claiming it be the ‘lungs of the city’ after it was announced to be in the running for an award as the UK’s Best Park.
Fields in Trust’s annual awards ceremony in December celebrates the great work being done in parks and playgrounds across the UK. This year, for the first time, the Fields in Trust Awards will feature a special category ‘UK’s Best Park’ that will be entirely voted for by the public. Voting is now open, for more information and to cast your vote, visit the Fields in Trust website.
Anne said, ‘open spaces are a vital part of the city centre. They are the lungs of the city. People have hectic and busy lives, so it is important that in cities like St Albans we have outdoor spaces that local people can enjoy with their families.
‘Victoria Playing Fields encapsulates all that is good about St Albans: it has a long history, perhaps dating back to the Roman period; it has been used in industry; and was granted to the city of St Albans by a local, philanthropic businessman, Charles Woollam.
‘I am delighted that the park has been recognised given its history, and importance to local people. I would encourage constituents who have a particular fondness for the park to log on to the website and vote.’
