Time Is Now campaign

Anne Main MP meets St Albans climate change activists
1st July 2019

Last week, Anne Main MP met with a group of climate change campaigners from St Albans in Parliament. The group were in Westminster as part of ‘The Time is Now’ lobby day organised by The Climate Coalition. Over 300 MPs came to meet their constituents as part of the action day.

The group of activists were keen to stress their concerns about the pressing need for strong action to tackle climate change. The last few months have seen numerous protests and marches organised to highlight people’s concern about the damage being done to our environment and climate.

Last week, the UK government became the first major economy in the world to pass laws to end its contribution to global warming by 2050.

The target will require the UK to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, compared with the previous target of at least 80% reduction from 1990 levels.

The UK has already reduced emissions by 42% while growing the economy by 72% and has put clean growth at the heart of its modern Industrial Strategy.

Mrs Main has been an active campaigner on environmental and climate policy since she became an MP in 2005. In recent years, Mrs Main has established a cross-party group on reducing plastic waste and has consistently spoken up about the need for governments across the world to do more to improve our natural environment.

Following the meeting, the St Albans MP said:

“I was extremely impressed with the scale of this lobby day. It shows the strength of feeling on this issue and rightly so.

“It was great to speak with St Albans residents who came down on the day and to hear about their passion and desire to make big changes. They all wanted to see even more action and wanted to see the UK leading on the world stage on this issue.

“I will continue to campaign in Parliament for improvements to our environmental policy and I hope that other countries around the world will follow our lead in aiming for net zero emissions as soon as is practically possible.”
