On Saturday at Fleetville recreation ground, 600 people broke their fast together at the St Albans Big Iftar event. It was led by The Adda Club, a local organisation promoting Bangladeshi culture, social and linguistic traditions within St Albans and the surrounding areas. The event was a big community celebration with people from many cultures and faiths. As well as sharing food, there was music, entertainment and a bouncy castle for the children.
Iftar is the evening meal at sunset during the Holy month of Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. This year Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, will be on the 4th June.
St Albans MP, Anne Main said, “It was a pleasure to attend the big iftar this year with local Muslims and of course the many other people who joined on the day from other faiths. The event brought lots of people together and it showed the great community spirit we have here in St Albans. I must congratulate the organisers who put a lot of work into making the event as successful as it was.”
