Rail freight update – Inquiry begins on 24th November

I wanted to write to let you know that the planning inquiry into the Park Street Rail Freight proposal is due to begin next Tuesday, 24th November at 10am at the Council Offices in St Peter’s Street, St Albans.

STRiFE are urging as many people as possible to be present to show the Inspector exactly how we feel about the proposal. The morning of 24th November will see opening statements from the Council, HelioSlough and STRiFE, and these will also be webcast live. After this, the Inquiry is due to continue for four weeks, being held from Tuesday to Friday from 10am until 5pm, and will be open to the public during these times.

If you would like to speak at the Inquiry, you need to inform Lesley Young, the programme officer, and supply her with your name, the name of the group you represent and contact information by next Monday 23 November.  You will then need to supply her with a copy of your evidence, in writing (and if possible, electronically) by 30 November.

Please ensure that you do this, as otherwise you will not be allowed to speak on Public Day, the date of which is yet to be confirmed. Lesley’s contact details are: Telephone: 01727 819304, Email: pins.appeals@stalbans.gov.uk, Address: Programme Officer, St Albans City and District Council, Civic Centre, St Peters Street, St Albans, AL1 3JE.

I will be attending on the first day, and will be trying to attend on as many days as parliamentary business allows. I continue to work with STRiFE, and have a number of productive meetings with various organisations over the past few months. I shall speak up your behalf at the Inquiry to try to oppose this project, which I believe would be a blight on our community.

As you know I regularly write to over a thousand constituents about railfreight, and this is proving rather costly.  In order to reduce costs and environmental impact it would be better to email, rather than post, these updates to as many people as possible. If you would be happy to receive these updates via email, I would be grateful if you could please send me an email, including your name and address, to maina@parliament.uk and I will put you on my electronic mailing list. I will, of course, continue to send by post where this is more convenient.

With best wishes,

Anne Main
