St Albans school children get less educational support
8th March 2010
Anne Main has today highlighted Government figures which show that secondary schools in the St Albans constituency have a pupil to staff ratio that is lower than the national average.
Whilst in England as a whole there is an average of 10.7 pupils to each adult in a Secondary school setting, in St Albans there the rate is 11.5 pupils per adult.
Anne said:
“These figures show that local families are getting a raw deal from this Government, with schools elsewhere in the country being prioritised for with higher levels of staffing than in our area. This is unfair on the pupils and parents of St Albans and, indeed, the staff.
I have frequently highlighted how, under this Government’s funding formulas, which determine the amount of money allocated to our health services, schools and other services, we get a poor settlement. This Government has viewed St Albans as a cash cow and last year a survey showed that people in St Albans pay more income tax than anywhere else in the country. Yet we see less funding allocated back to local services.
We need a fairer funding package for local services, and for local people to be put on a level pegging with those in other parts of the country.”
