EDMOs aren’t working for St Albans
10th March 2010
Anne Main has today highlighted figures which show that Empty Dwelling Management Orders have done nothing to reduce the number of empty homes in St Albans.
The Government introduced Empty Dwelling Management Orders in June June 2006, aiming to enable local authorities in England and Wales to take over and rent out properties which had been empty for at least six months. However, figures uncovered by Anne today show the number of empty dwellings in St Albans is higher now than it was in 2005.
Anne said:
“These figures are particularly disappointing. The Government introduced these in 2006 in a big fanfare saying this would stop properties lying idle.
However, even in an area like ours, where house prices are high, they are hardly used. Local councils are reluctant to use them and they are a toothless piece of legislation.”
