Anne Main secures debate on firefighters in Hertfordshire

19th November 2008

Following worrying stories at last week's lobby by the Fire Brigade Union, Anne Main has secured a Commons debate on firefighters in Hertfordshire next Tuesday.

Following worrying stories at last week's lobby by the Fire Brigade Union, Anne Main, MP for St Albans, has secured a Commons debate on firefighters in Hertfordshire next Tuesday (25th November), to challenge Government Ministers on some of the concerns raised.

Anne said:

"I am glad to have been able to secure this debate. Some of the concerns put to me by members of the Fire Brigade Union were deeply worrying and I felt this was something which must be taken to the highest level as soon as possible.

I shall take this valuable opportunity to truly hold the Government to account on this, and really draw their attention to the situation on the ground in Hertfordshire. Locally, we have suffered the loss of Radlett fire station and our firefighters are repeatedly asked to attend flooding incidents which they are not statutorily obliged to do. This stretches their resources even further.

There are also serious issues to do with training, kit and resources that need debating, coupled with approximately 40 outstanding policy recommendations concerning the fire services that the Government needs to address. No more firefighters should have to die before the Government wakes up to these issues.""
