Anne Main was successful in securing a debate with the Minister for Housing and Planning, Yvette Cooper, yesterday regarding the proposed rail freight terminal on the outskirts of St Albans. She was also joined by James Clappison MP (Hertsmere).
Anne said: "I was determined that this debate was framed in strict planning terms. I wanted the Minister to be aware of the numerous comments both from the Hertfordshire County Council and the Regional Assembly that indicate that this proposal simply does not stack up, and is contrary to many planning policies which seek to protect the green belt and ensure development is appropriately located. I have been sent hundreds of letters from residents who testify that our roads are currently so congested we cannot accommodate a proposal that seeks access on local roads.
"I hope the Minister has been left in no doubt as to the inappropriateness of this proposal and to the strength of local opposition. I shall continue to raise this matter in Parliament and urge local residents to make their voice felt."
