Anne Main discusses the work of Emmaus in St Albans with Terry Waite

8th September 2008

Anne Main, MP for St Albans, attended a garden party held by Emmaus St Albans on Saturday along with the President of Emmaus UK, Terry Waite CBE.

Emmaus St Albans opened in 2002 and is based in Hill End Lane. Emmaus runs two shops in the area and has the capacity to house twenty four companions.

Anne said:

"It was a privilege to meet Terry Waite, who was inspired to become involved with Emmaus through his work with Archbishop Runcie. Terry told me that the mental stamina that he had to draw on as a hostage in captivity is very similar to the mental stamina homeless people have to develop as they try to survive and get their lives back in order.

Talking to some of the companions who live at Emmaus St Albans it was clear that Terry’s visit has given the community a massive boost. Homelessness could happen to anyone and it is important that we recognise the fantastic facility that Emmaus has in St Albans and the contribution this makes to the community. Work is so valuable in helping people to find their feet and take pride in their lives and jobs again."
